Description: photo montage, image of marblized paper
Label Text: Exhibtion label text from Faint/Hidden/Shrouded: Contemplating Obscurity (March 27-May 10, 2024): John Piper employs photography, silhouettes, complex patterns, and contrasting colors to present duel images of a female nude. Layers of red and black pigment and flower silhouettes ground the figure as a part of, and yet removed from, her surroundings. Her body is revealed but also veiled to reflect the romanticized gaze of the artist upon his life-long partner, Myfanwy Piper. - Graduate curators: Ruthie Baker, MFA Studio Arts; Simone Cambridge, MA History of Art & Architecture; and Olivia Haynes PhD in the W.E.B. DuBois Department of Afro-American Studies, UMASS
