Description: Printed in an edition of five hundred, this screenprint portfolio was commissioned by the Wadsworth Atheneum and published on December 15, 1964. In the spirit of printmaking as a democratic medium, the project aimed to "extend the visual impact as much as possible of ten artists to paper and to make these prints available to collectors who might not otherwise have such a vivid slice of the artist." Samuel J. Wagstaff, Jr., the museum's Curator of Paintings, Prints and Drawings from 1961 to 1968, selected this group of leading contemporary artists from among those working in abstraction and Pop art. Nearly all of the Ten by Ten participants would achieve major popular and critical success in their careers, confirming Wagstaff's well-earned reputation for spotting and nurturing great artistic talent ahead of the field.
