Description: Woman squatting down to touch ground with hand.
Label Text: From the exhibition "Isabel Bishop's Working Women: Defying Conventions" at the Michelle and David D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts, Springfield Museums, Springfield, MA; November 13, 2018 - May 26, 2019: One of Isabel Bishop's many insightful sketches, this work is particularly interesting for its formal qualities and combined use of ink wash and line. In this drawing, the artist captures a woman who bends down, perhaps to pick up something that she has dropped. Bishop renders the body from different perspectives creating a circular composition. The stripes on the figure's dress radiate from the center of the work, resulting in an interesting design. These formal elements, along with the artist's generous use of ink wash, flatted the space within the drawing and create an atmospheric effect. Within this compressed arrangement, Bishop's skillful handling of line and contour help to distinguish the figure from the background.
