Description: from portfolio "In Our Time - Covers for a Small Library after the Life for the Most Part," 1 of 50
Label Text: Excerpt from wall label “What Is Love: Selections from the Permanent Collection,” April 19 – June 3, 2007 Created in 1969, this series of fifty-one screen prints was produced the year R. B. Kitaj’s wife passed away. Towards a Better Life, the title of a novel by Kenneth Burke written in 1933, was selected by Kitaj from his library, along with the other book jackets and/or covers of a range of publications (e.g. fiction, poetry, artists, government reports, etc.). Kitaj acknowledged the Readymade aspect of this series, referring to it as one of his “post-Duchampian temptations.” While these prints relate to Kitaj’s other works, it has been suggested that they also offer an opportunity for the viewer to participate actively in constructing meaning based on his or her own knowledge of these publications. - Julie Thomson (M.A. '07)
