Description: Paper with pigments in shades of red, purple and black folded into an abstract form.
Label Text: Label text (excert) from graduate curated exhibition: "We Gotta Get Out of This Place - Transportive Art" March 24 - May 1 and September 30 - December 11, 2022; Tirzah Frank (MA 2022) and Cecily Hughes (MA 2022) Renowned for his draped canvas paintings, Sam Gilliam purposefully plays with, and pushes past, boundaries. By freeing his canvases from the frame, the artist sets up painting as sculptural, and sculpture as painterly. Sparta may refer to the town of Sparta, Mississippi, where Sam Gilliam’s father was born. Glowing and rippling with jewel-tone hues that sag into seductive shadows, it evokes a rich emotional connection to the subject, perhaps showing yet another interpretation of “home.”
