Label Text: Label text for ARH 240 French and Italian Drawings Renaissance through Romanticism, written by Carol Kaminsky:
Winner of the first prize for figure drawing at the age of thirteen, Wicar made a multitude of similar unspecified sketches over the course of his career. He drew with a light but firm hand and minimal shading, leaving many areas unresolved as if the image were only a passing thought. A student of Jacques-Louis David, he embraced Neoclassicism, working successfully in France and Italy before and after the French Revolution. A knowledgeable art dealer, connoisseur, and collector, Wicar left 1300 drawings to his native city of Lille.
