Oskar Kokoschka is best known for his highly expressionistic paintings and portraits. This landscape was painted during World War II in Scotland, after the artist fled Nazi Germany for Prague in 1934 and went from there to the United Kingdom in 1938.
Scottish Landscape was begun in April or May of 1944, while Kokoschka and his wife, Olda, were visiting friends in Port William, a village in a remote region of lowland Scotland. Elrig Loch and Airlyck Farm are shown in the background, with sheep and grouse in the foreground. Kokoschka completed the landscape in London the following year. As the artist wrote, remembering the scene in Scotland and recording it on canvas helped him “to forget the awful civilization and state of the world we live in at present.”
