This painting belongs to a series by Yasuki Masako titled Obliterated Ground, which deals with Japanese cities that were bombed and destroyed during World War II. Although the cityscapes in this series are based on real locations, the artist chooses not to identify them. Yasuki created the Museum’s painting from her memory of a view from a hill above a strategic target of U.S. air raids and photographs of the city taken after the war. She used asphalt from the city combined with charcoal as part of her materials, which she built in three different layers, using a combination of Japanese and Western techniques.

According to the painter, “I started this series to represent some sort of gap between historical images or knowledge and memory…and the physical world we really face, the actual landscape in front of us….”
