Description:
This Klamath or Modoc woven hat is tightly woven with decorative line and geometric patterns. With a light background, the hat or cap features false embroidery, in which patterns are woven onto the exterior (rather than inside) of the basket. This type of embroidery is common amongst tribal communities along the Southern coast of Oregon, whereas other Oregon and California tribes wove the designs directly into the entire hat. Along the rim of the hat is a red and brown geometric pattern, followed by red and brown horizontal lines and two more rows of the same repeating red and brown geometric motifs. The top of the hat, hidden in this photo, is also decorated. This portion would have been seen when worn on top of one's head. AP2018
