Description: patterned long horizontal frontal Pieta with figures dressed in 15th century garb holding naked Christ across their laps; religion - Christian
Label Text: This sculpture, once the center of a large altarpiece, shows the Virgin Mary mourning Christ, her son, after he is removed from the cross. Saint John the Evangelist, a member of Christ’s closest circle and the author of the Gospel of John, tenderly supports Christ’s head. His legs are held by Mary Magdalene, another one of his close followers. Behind, two holy women stand in prayer.
On the back of the sculpture is a partially lost inscription that records the dedicated and “heartfelt” restoration of this work in 1722. Also visible on this side are small holes caused by wood-boring insects.
