Label Text:
This page from a Persian manuscript of "Yusuf and Zulaikha" (Joseph and Poliphar's Wife) by the poet Abd al-Rahman Jami (1414-92) depicts Joseph bathing before being presented on the slave market; inspired by the twelfth chapter of the Quran, Jami's romantic epic rendition of the story, written in 1483, was the most popular version in the Persian-speaking world; a mystic poet himself, Jami composes the dramatic life story of Joseph as an allegory of the quest of the mystic for the love of God; several illustrated copies of the manuscript were produced in Central Asia, Iran, and northern India during the 16th and early 17th centuries.
