Description: Demonstration: activism: riot;
Label Text: An early print by Warhol, this image of civil rights protesters being attacked by policemen with dogs was taken from a 1963 image by photojournalist Charles Moore that was widely reproduced in newspapers across the country. Warhol initially used this image in his series of paintings called Disasters, which also featured repetitive images of car crashes and suicides. The isolation of this image (as opposed to its repetition), coupled with the strong contrast of the black and white and the thick application of the silkscreen ink, creates a work that moves easily between horrific, recognizable content and abstract patterning.
