Giuseppe Cesari experienced great artistic and social success. He was accepted by the Academy of Saint Luke when he was only 17 and became the principle painter for Pope Clement VIII. However, in 1607 Cardinal Borghese had Cesari arrested and confiscated his collection of 105 paintings which hang in the Cardinal’s villa, now called the Galleria Borghese. Despite Cesari’s humiliation, he regained academic (if not artistic) success and prominence. This drawing has not been identified as preparatory for any specific work, but is characteristic of the artist in its intermingling of red and black chalks.
