Label text for ARH 240 French and Italian Drawings Renaissance through Romanticism, written by Sara Ottomano, class of 2015:

Observing this drawing closely, one notes a refined draftsmanship where delicate black chalk outlines are combined with red chalk to clarify the forms, but the even application of the chalk makes it difficult to distinguish individual figures. The squaring evident on the drawing, created by the pressure of a stylus, was to help transfer the composition to a larger support, although no related painting is known. It is believed Rosso drew this after King Francis I summoned him to work in France in 1530.
