Description: landscape; architecture; outdoor; landscape with water
Label Text: Label text for ARH 240 French and Italian Drawings Renaissance through Romanticism, written by Amanda Manocherian, class of 2015:
Although Guercino is best known for his dramatic compositions and expert portrayal of complex human interactions, he spent much of his spare time later in life drawing landscapes. These drawings were not preparatory in nature and were in fact significantly stylistically different than his earlier works. Notably, his landscapes were not drawn from nature, but instead drawn from memory and imagination. This is why the images have a surreal feeling of order and balance.
