Drawings are often created as studies for other artworks. Over time, such drawings become coveted by collectors. They often display remarkable skill and give insight into the artist’s process. While paintings present a finished and polished work, drawings can reveal some of the many choices an artist made to achieve the final result.

Unsigned drawings can be difficult to attribute to a specific artist. This drawing has been associated with many different artists, making it a true study object that must have intrigued its previous owner, Smith College Professor Alphons P. A. Vorenkamp, who gave the drawing to the Museum. Although it entered the collection attributed to the Dutch artist Gerard ter Borch, later scholars felt it could easily be a work by Peter Lely (Dutch, active in England) or the Dutch artist Bartholomeus van der Helst.
