Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres was a champion of the French neo-classical tradition of history painting and one of the leading portraitists of the nineteenth century. His drawings, characterized by ethereally soft shading and sinuous contour lines, exude a cool sensuality and a luminous quality. Despite their subtlety, his portraits are extremely complex and psychologically insightful, often capturing the faintest traits of a subject’s personality.
During the years Ingres spent in Rome he drew this double portrait of two young architects who were attending The French Academy. The exquisitely delicate rendering of their individual faces is beautifully contrasted against their clothing, elegantly described by simple contours and casual shading.
