Description: standing bearded man in long robe and hat, proper right hand raised, proper left holding robe edge; religion - Christian; man
Label Text: Saint Peter can be identified here by the key that he holds, one of the “keys to the kingdom of heaven” entrusted to him by Christ. The flat, block-like forms and linear surface patterns of the carving reflect the Romanesque style of the twelfth century.
The figure was once part of a group of nine sculptures that comprised a scene of the ascension of Christ into heaven following his resurrection from the dead. Recent scientific analysis has determined that the sculptures, probably made for a church doorway, were carved from a type of limestone quarried near the town of Sarlat (Dordogne region), in south-central France.
