Churchill was inspired by his studies and multiple stays in Paris to depict this city in a style similar to the Impressionist art he had observed there. Like the French Impressionists before him, Churchill employs a painterly style in showing the modern city of Paris, with the individual brushstrokes immediately visible to the viewer. This painting shares characteristics of Impressionism, such as the fleeting effects of light, with works by French artists, such as Monet or Pissarro, as well as works by noted American Impressionist Childe Hassam, whose Cab Stand at Night, Madison Square (1891) and Street Scene, Christmas Morn (1892) also hang in this gallery.
Alfred Vance Churchill was the first director of SCMA and a professor of art history from 1905 until 1932. SCMA has a large collection of Churchill’s work, all of which were gifts from Smith alumnae. He was also instrumental in helping the museum to acquire works by French Impressionists.
