Label Text: SKINNER CATALOGUE: A middle 19th century barometer of the mercury, U tube type. Long wooden frame with brass ring at top for hanging and 10 1/2" x 1 1/2" glass window for reading the indicator, which registers from 27 to 31" pressure, divided into tenths. Complete, but not now in working order. This used to hang on the piazza of the old Charles Ball homestead on Northampton Street, Holyoke. The indicator is marked: TIMBY'S PATENT Nov. 3rd 1857 The fall of the Mercury indicates a storm - The rise of the Mercury indicates fair Weather. A label on the back, one of corner of which has been torn off, reads: Timby's Patent Barometer - For observation, the Barometer should be hung up... convenient place in the House, then turn the thumb screw (...near the bottom) to a perpendicular, when the Mercury... its proper level. To render the instrument portable, gently in .. about 40 degrees or 45 degrees, when the Mercury will completely fill the tube.. turn the thumb screw directly across the instrument; it may then be carried with safety.
