Description:
Stoneware plate. University pattern in dark blue. Marked: Transylvania University - Lexington. Transylvania University, organized in 1783 at Lexington, Kentucky, was the first institution of learning west of the Alleghenies. The building shown on the plate, three stories with a cupola in the center, was built in 1817. Impressed with a spread eagle and shield. E. Wood - Burselm - Warranted - Semi China.
