Description:
Face reads: "Silk Association of America" with an image of two women standing next to a shield depicting parts of the silk making process. Dated 1872, which is the date the Silk Assocation was founded. Back is marked: "W.H. Co, Newark, N.J. Patent applied for."7 More than likely the button belonged to William Skinner, father of Joseph Allen Skinner, as he served as Director for the Silk Association. After the Mill River Disaster of May 1874, the Association collected subscriptions and raised over $2,756 to help 43 families from the Skinner Silk Mills and 40 families of Nonotuck Silk Manufacturers in Leeds.
