Description:
The Virgin appears at center on a crescent moon supported by a winged putto, standing with her left leg bent and looking downwards as she folds her hand in prayer. Her blue mantle is decorated with gold stars, and she is completely surrounded by a gold nimbus. The vignettes that appear in the four corners of the composition depict events associated with her miraculous appearance. The Basilica of Santa María de Guadalupe is depicted in the vignette at bottom center. Behind it and on the hill of Tepeyac reached by a winding path is the Capilla del Cerrito, built on the site of the apparitions of the Virgin. Garlands of soft-pink roses and blue flowers trail up the outer edges of the painting along the blue ribbons that connect the vignettes in fictive rococo frames.
