In December 1890, the United States Cavalry entered a Sioux encampment near Wounded Knee Creek at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, leading to the slaughter of more than 150 men, women, and children. The events were precipitated by the failure of the US government to honor their treaties with the Sioux and other tribes, the encroachment of white settlers on their way of life, and an aggressive military campaign to pacify them. This photograph of the mass gravesite recalls this dark period in US-Sioux history, and underscores the importance of present-day conversations about the protection of Native lands and sovereignty.
