Description: Dinner scene. Couple kissing on right
Label Text: This engraving belongs to a series illustrating the four phases of the day—morning, afternoon, evening, and night. In this print—depicting evening—a family gathers around the dinner table, joined by a lute player in the far left, and a jester who pours their wine. Through the open window in the upper right we see an allegory of evening, including the Roman moon goddess, Luna, who looks down upon the happy scene from her celestial perch.
Saenredam, who studied with Goltzius and copied many of his subjects, is noted for the delicacy and intricacy of his engravings. In this print he crafts a traditional Dutch genre scene of the upper classes at leisure, but imbues it with the whimsy of classical myth.
