Label Text:
Replica of the young god Hermes, from first-century Roman bronze found in the ruins of the so-called Villa dei Papiri at Herculaneum. It is this villa that was the model for the Getty Museum in Malibu, California, and another copy of this sculpture can be seen there alongside the pool in the central peristyle. The Roman sculpture was itself a copy after a lost Greek original of ca. 340-310 B.C. The Mount Holyoke cast was made around 1900 in Naples by the Chiurazzi Foundry which was famous for its reproductions of ancient sculpture. Many such pieces were acquired by travellers on the "Grand Tour" as souvenirs of their excursions.
