Description:
ca. early 20th century plaster cast of a Pentelic marble original dating to the Archaic Period, ca. 510-500 BCE. This relief, found built into the Themistocleian Wall near the Dipylon and the Kerameikos cemetery in Athens, Greece, is one of three panels from the base of a funerary statue. Four male figures are engaged in watching a fighting match between a cat and a dog. The two positioned towards the center of the relief are seated, encouraging the animals. The men to the far left and the far right right stand and look on. The original marble relief after which this cast is made is located at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece.
