Description:
ca. late 19th or early 20th century plaster cast of a marble original dating to the Classical Period, ca. 447-432 BCE. This cast is of south metope XXVII of the Parthenon, located on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The south metope reliefs depict the mythological conflict between the Lapiths and the Centaurs at the wedding of King Perithoos, an event known as the Centauromachy. On this metope, a Lapith, to the left, and a Centaur, to the right, are pictured in battle; both figures are missing their heads. The Lapith faces the viewer, holding the Centaur’s head from behind with his left hand and preparing to strike with his outstretched right hand; a cloak is draped over his arms, behind his back. His right leg is missing below the knee. The Centaur rears up, holding his right hand against an apparent wound on his back. His left arm and right front leg are missing. The original marble relief after which this cast is made is located at the British Museum in London, England.
