Description:
ca. late 19th or early 20th century plaster cast of a marble original dating to the Classical Period, ca. 447-432 BCE. This cast is of figure K from the east pediment of the Parthenon, located on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The group of sculptures on the east pediment composed a scene depicting the patron goddess of Athens, Athena, being born from the head of her father and the king of the gods, Zeus. This seated female figure is generally identified as Hestia, the goddess of hearth and home, although some make the alternative supposition that it is a depiction of Leto, the mother of Apollo and Artemis. The original marble sculpture after which this cast is made is located at the British Museum in London, England.
