Description: Pair of solid cast brass miniature candlesticks or tapersticks with shaped domed bases. According to Schiffer in "The Brass Book": "...place this candlestick at two different areas: Germany because of the heavy base, and Spain because of the shape of the candle cup. Since most candlesticks started in Spain and moved north, both origins are possible. The Spanish attribution probably is more statisfactory because of other candlesticks...that have a strong Spanish association and this candle cup." This base, however, is also found on Scandanavian candlesticks of the period. These "egg cup" candle cups or sockets have a wide rim; over a short collar and baluster or urn-shaped turning; over a narrow stem; over a drip pan with a molded edge; over incurving sides; over a flat onion-like rounded base and flat foot. There are incised lines on the edge of the drip pan and a hand turned screw connecting the base to the shaft. Potter Inventory No. 81. Condition: P.127A has solder around the base screw (candlestick was originally threaded and it was soldered together at a later time), dented rim of base edge, otherwise in very good condition. P.127 unscrews Rushlight Club 10/9/2016: the candlecup is made with a core pin mold - not a two-part mold. These examples are very thin and are more typical of Scandinavian examples than Spanish.
