Description:
Crewel embroidered or appliqued quilt with polychrome crewel (two-ply wool) embroidery of a tree of life pattern with scrolling flowers and leaves and two peacocks perched on limbs, in light and dark green, pink, aqua, yellow, and mustard on a plain weave white linen. The color palette would indicate that the wools were most likely puchased. Handquilted, the linen may have been homespun or purchased as a lesser-grade linen. The stitches are primarily New England laid and bullion. The quilt is backed with another plain weave linen, pieced in several areas. This, along with the presence of several cross stitched sets of initials done in silk floss, suggests the backing was reused from earlier sheets.
