Description:
Waistcoat made of light-green, ribbed silk taffeta with polychromel tambour embroidery of floral garlands, modern silk twill facing, linen backing and sleeves, and 11 buttons, and 12 buttonholes. This is an example of a pre-made waistcoat which was fitted to the purchaser by his local tailor. The length of fabric from which it was cut even included the small circles of embroidery used to cover buttons. Waistcoats were not always sleeveless, and the inclusion of coverings for the arm added warmth. The expensive silk and silk embroidery used on the front of this example was reserved for those areas that would be seen. Cheaper linen covered the back and sleeves in areas hidden under a coat.
