Description: Woven blue and white coverlet made of hand-spun wool, dyed with indigo and white, factory-spun cotton, which was made by Nancy Ashley Spencer (1803-1893?). Her parents, Luther Ashley (1764-1819) and his second wife Eunice Smith Ashley (1782-1856?), who married in 1800, moved from Shutesbury to Deerfield in 1804. Nancy married Hiram Spencer (1797-1871) in 1818; they lived in Huron County, Ohio, where she carded and spun the wool for this coverlet. This surprisingly "modern" looking bed cover was one of the first textiles purchased by Helen Flynt in 1946.
