Description: Needlework sampler with silk embroidery in green, blue, tan, brown, cream and black on unbleached linen ground made by Hannah Graves (1806-1864). The daughter of Levi Graves (1769-1844) and Editha Field Graves (1777-1854) of Whately who married in 1805, Hannah married Banister Morton (1805-1883) in Hatfield, Massachusetts, in 1824. The sampler has three rows of the alphabet; over "Let ev'ry virtue reign within thy breast,/ That heaven approves or makes its owner / To candour, truth, and charity divine, [blest,/ The modest, decent, lovely vitues join,/ Let wit well temper'd meet / with sense refined,/ And ev'ry thought express/ the polish'd mind;" over a center plate which reads "Hannah Graves / Whately Wrought 1818" flanked by flowers and two small pine tree shapes. There is also the intials "SN" in the lower right corner, which are possibly the initials of an unidentified school mistress.
