Description: Handkerchief made of extremely fine linen with a hemstitched edge within 1/16" of hem edge and 3/8" handmade bobbin lace trim edging. One corner is marked in ink "S. S. Bryant" who is probably Sarah Smith Bryant (1812-1887), the daughter of John Bryant (1780-1865) and Mary Cleveland Smith (1784-1860) of Boston, and married Joseph Story Fay (1812-1897) in 1840. See HD 95.020.1 for her sampler. Also see the Massachusetts Historical Society for the Bryant-Mason-Smith Family Papers, 1767-1861. There are 2 places where the hemstitching has broken away due to the fineness of the thread.
