Description: Needlework Sampler embroidered with cross-stitched silk threads in blue, green, pink, yellow, and tan on off-white linen with two rows of the alphabet (missing "J' and "U"), a row of numbers 1-10 and "1670," and the initials "MM / SH." The sampler is decorated with flower sprays, a bird feeding its young, a tulip in a vase, and squirrels. The placement of the date with points between the numbers is typical of German work and is also slosely related to what was being done in the low countries. Three edges are finished; the lower 4th edge is cut and frayed. This sampler was purchased by the doners from a local auction house in 1991, and was said to have been found at a yard sale in Sunderland, Massachusetts.
