Description:
English Staffordshire blue transfer-printed pearlware bowl decorated with a scene of men fishing from a punt near a two-story Jacobean mansion house and hills in the backgroun on two exterior sides; a group of women, children, and a dog in front of a country mansion in the center well; and a repeated acorn and oak leaf border around the rim and foot ring. According to family tradition, the bowl belonged to Ruby Graves Stebbins (1797-1877) who married Zebina Stebbins (1797-1879) of South Deerfield on January 14, 1819; the bowl descended through their son, Evander (1821-1885), to his great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Shaw Williams (the donor). The scene, titled "HOLLIWELL COTTAGE" on the base, was based on the source print by John Preston Neale, "Holywell Cottage, Cavan [Ireland]", found in "Views of the Seats of Noblemen and Gentlemen in England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland." Hollywell is in a small Irish village known as Belcoo on the border between the counties of Cavan and Fermanagh, about 9 miles south west of Enniskillen. "The Cottage" is a long low shooting lodge built of bargeboards about 1830, which was later extended to include a central yard. Produced by several Staffordhsire potteries, this version is attributed to Ralph Stevenson (operating c.1810-1835) as part of their Acorn and Oak Leaf Border Series. The bowl has a flared scalloped rim, two dark blue bracket handles with light blue plumed tops, and high foot ring.
