Description:
Oil painting on an oak panel printed across the bottom, "Monument and Sugarloaf Mountain, Deerfield" and signed "J. Short PTR" on the fence on the right. The scene depicts a man and boy in the left foreground standing by a road and pointing to a stone obelisk monument (Bloody Brook Monument) where another man and boy are standing in the mid-ground; a white fence, trees, and Sugarloaf Mountain, Deerfield, in the background; and a man in a one-horse carriage and gable-ends of a house and barn on the right. The scene is taken from an engraving of the Bloody Brook Monument that appears in John Warner Barber's "Historical Collections" published in 1839.
