Description: Double woven cotton coverlet in indigo wool and natural colored cotton, which has the date "1825" over a bull laying on the ground with all four legs folded in each corner; and a center design of a wreath-like pattern and smaller leaf and blossom similar to a snowflake. The bull motif in coverlets like this example are indicative of a Suffolk County (Long Island), New York, manufacture. A group of similar coverlets are all woven between 1823 and 1833, making this example in Historic Deerfield's collection an early coverlet in the group. Because of the very early date, this coverlet could have been woven on a drawloom, barrel loom or a Jacquard loom, the latter technique only introduced and used in the United States in the 1820s. A label or business card that may have been attached to the coverlet suggests that it was acquired by the donor from Mrs. Robert S. Gardner (possibly an antiques dealer) in Derby, Connecticut. An identical coverlet identified with "MH" and "1824" appears in the Foster and Muriel McCarl collection (see notes).
