Description: Framed needlework picture of a shepherd, one of a pair with a shepherdess (HD 89.071) done in wool and silk on canvas, which is inscribed "SARAH FLETCH / ER 1741." This picture has a red brick building typical of New England architecture and a red-winged bird which are features found on other similar American needlework pieces from the Boston area from around the period 1723-1780. Boston area schools were advertising lessons in pastoral needleworks, many based on English prints, but with design alterations distinguishing them from typical English needleworks portraying castles, etc. The Shepherd is standing in a flowering landscape, and is wearing a brown hat and striped brown and beige jacket, holding a striped pole in his right arm as four sheep and a dog group around him and a red-winged bird flies over his head; there is a red brick building in the left background and oak tree in the right.
