Description:
By the 1840s, women's bonnets featured deep, rounded brims. While dramatically framing the face, these bonnet shapes effectively limited the wearer's vision to straight in front of them, while also limiting views of the wearer's face. This example is made of off-white tucked courduroy and matching satin weave silk. The effect, while monochromatic, plays off the mat and shiny aspects of each textile, respectively. The hat secures with two satin ties (18" x 2.38") that have embroidered edge and woven pattern; pleated bavolet (3.5" long) on the back of bonnet; and crinoline lining inside hat and net lining on bavolet.
