Description: Pieced, cotton quilt laid out in the Ship's Wheel pattern in red, yellow/orange, and white with a hourglass in the corners laid out in side-by -side square blocks (5 vertical rows, 5 horizontal rows); white cotton backing; and cotton batting. This quilt was inherited by Richard Brown Coombs from his mother, Nettie Jane Brown Coombs (1888-1936). According to family tradition, Nettie Jan Coombs's mother, Nora Violet Brown (1849-1926), brought the quilt with her from her home in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, when she married Orville Martin Brown (1844-1912) of Colrain, Massachusetts. They met during the Civil War when Orville Brown (Co. F, 34th Regiment, Mass. Volunteers) was wounded at Harper's Ferry and taken for care to Nora Violet Brown's house which was being used as a hospital.
