Description:
Two-piece dress hand-made and machine sewn in purple and yellow striped silk, which was worn by Susan Melissa Burgess (1852-1940), the daughter of Alfred Burgess (1827-1897) and Julia Ann Rounds (1822-1882), for her marriage to Stephen Irving Dexter (c.1847-1900) on Sept. 16, 1873 in Killingly, Connecticut. They later moved to Providence, RI, and had four children. Their younger daughter, Lunette E. Dexter Corbin (b.1884), was the mother of the donor, Horace H. Corbin. "Susan Burgess" is inscribed in ink inside the bodice. The dress, which is made in style popular in the 1860s, has a cotton-lined bodice with high, rounded neckline, dropped shoulders, and a front closure (hooks and eyes); the full skirts fastens up the front and has large pleats in the back.
