Description:
Man's coat made of brown wool broadcloth with a high notched collar and two long tails. According to Sharon Takeda and Kaye Durland Spilker, "The art of tailoring made significant advances in the second quarter of the 19th century, with highly enginered tailcoat becoming an essential element of menswear. The secret of the tailor's smooth, elegant exteror was its intricately pad-stitched interior. Wool was the tailor's fabric of choice, as it could be stretched, shrunk, or shaped, using friction and heat to create a precise fit."

Subjects:
Textile fabrics; Wool
