Description:
Framed sampler done in silk embroidery on unbleached, plain-weave linen ground with the inscription, "Miranda Arms aged / 8 31st of August 1808." Miranda Arms (1800 was the daughter of Henry Arms (1769-1848) and Experience Gates Arms (1775-1848) of Conway. She married Augustus Wells (1798-1861), the son of Samuel Wells (1772-1816) and Esther Arms Wells (1772-1853) of Deerfield, in 1826, and they lived in the Wells homelot (Lot 13) facing the Deerfield Common, which was inherited by Augustus and Miranda's son, Samuel F. Wells (1828-1873), and burned down in 1892. The sampler was sold at Amhurst Auction Galleries, June 12, 1976, as part of the estate of Mary W. (Mollie) Wells of Deerfield, their great granddaughter. The sampler has four rows of the alphabet in small, capital, and script letters, and flower and fruit baskets, flowers, birds, a dog, and the numbers 1-9.
