Description:
Tan-colored, straight sided stoneware jar decorated with blue leaves around the upper 1/3 of the body. The jar has a wide irregularly-shaped open mouth, over an incurving neck and two incised lines, over a slightly tapered body and flat base. There is no evidence of Albany slip on the interior. Paint drips on the surface of the pot should be removed. According to stoneware collector Peter Schreiber, this little jar is most probably from Baltimore MD, c. 1850 - c1880s. That particular jar form began about 1830 and went to 1890s and many potteries (in Baltimore and across Pennsylvania) copied it. Richard Remmey in Philadelphia, PA, was a prominent manufacturer of these jars.
