Framed copperplate engraving of St. John, the author of the fourth gospel, in robes seated to the left witha scroll in his right hand and his left hand on a book, with his eyes raised upwards and an eagle (the bird thought to fly closest to heaven and the saint's attribute) flying overhead, which is titled "St. John the Evangelist" and inscribed "Engraved for Collins's Quarto Bible, Second Edition" and "Domeninichino plwc" and "A. Anderson Sc." The engraving was based on a painting by Domenico Zampieri or Domenichino (1581-1641), an Italian Baroque painter of the Bolognese School, or Carracci School, of painters. Born in New York City, Alexander Anderson (1775-1870) was educated as a physician, but taught himself to engrave and devoted his life to engraving. This edition of the Bible was published by Collins, Perkins, and Co. of NYC in 1807.
