Description: Silver baluster-shaped caster with a separate domed, pierced cover and splayed and molded base, which is unmarked but attributed to Jacob Hurd (1702/3-1758) since this caster is identical to one listed by Hollis French and marked by Jacob Hurd. The upper body is engraved with the initials "H / AS," which are thought to be for the Harris family of Boston. Jacob Hurd has long been recognized as one of the leading New England silversmiths of the mid-18th century. The patriarch of a prominent Boston silversmithing family, he produced a wide range of tablewares in the Queen Anne style. Casters were often used for sugar and other dry condiments at table.
