James Walker Tufts (1835-1905) was a well-known soda fountain manufacturer in Boston who expanded his business in 1875 (incorporated in 1881) to include an extensive line of quadruple plated hollow wares. Tufts is also know for establishing Pinehurst, North Carolina, which was his dream of a New England-style resort village halfway between Boston and Florida; he bought 5000 acres in the Sandhills in 1895, where he built the village and a golf course .
