Description:
Oil portrait of George Washington by Jane Stuart (1812-1888), daughter of Gilbert Stuart, which was once owned by the Merriman family of East Hartford, Conn. She carried on her father's commissions when he became incapacitated. After her father's death in 1828, she, her mother, and three sisters moved from Boston to Newport, RI, where she spent most of her life, although she did maintain a studio in Boston during the 1850s. She is mainly known for her copies of her father's portriats of Washington, such as this example, a copy of the Vaughan Portrait.
